9 of 10 people found the following review helpful Some pleasures just keep on giving . . ., July 27, 2011 By This review is from: Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T* ZF.2 Series Lens for Nikon F Mount SLR Cameras (Electronics) I've had my Zeiss 21mm 2.8 ZF.2 lens now since December of last year and yet I remain hesitant to pass along any of my findings to the general public at large.
Please, don't miss understand me. It's not that this amazing lens has failed to amaze me a million times over since then, in a million different ways. Nor is it a sign that I haven't yet made a full assessment of this finely crafted work of art. The truth of the matter probably lies closer to the fact that I haven't words to describe this wonderful gift of mine just yet.
What I will say about this lens is that it is the first lens that I reach for in the morning, and it has become more of a permanent fixture to my D-700. It's the one lens that I grab for from landscape to macro photography and everything in between. It never fails to capture the shot with greater detail, clarity and color than any of my other lenses . . . and I've got a few!!
I must admit that I was intimidated, at first,... Read more
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful Anybody who rates this lens less than 5 stars probably doesn't have it!, December 25, 2011 By This review is from: Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T* ZF.2 Series Lens for Nikon F Mount SLR Cameras (Electronics) I read the 2 star rating on here and just shook my head! My guess is, that the poster is a fanboy of a specific brand (nikon, canon, etc.) and bad mouths other brands, or simply does not have the money for this very expensive piece of glass. I shoot it on my Nikon D700 and the pics. it produces are nothing short of stunning. Manual focus? Yes, of course it is. But it is so buttery smooth and user friendly, virtually all of your still shots will be in focus. There is a focus dot that tells you when your shot is in focus-it is very user friendly! I would guess out of a 100 shots, 95% or better will be tack sharp. It is not an action lens. Don't take this lens on your whale viewing/jumping tour and expect your shots to be in focus......they won't. That is not what it was made for. I've compared it to the Nikon 24mm 1.4G and walked away much preferring the Zeiss so much that I purchased it. However, the Nikon is actually designed for different shots than the Zeiss. I know, I... 1 of 33 people found the following review helpful It's OK, November 28, 2011 By This review is from: Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T* ZF.2 Series Lens for Nikon F Mount SLR Cameras (Electronics) Ordered/use this for my D700/F5/D3s
PROS
Expensive!
Few pro photographers have this on their cameras (sets you apart).
Turns heads.
Nicer box than most lenses.
Zeiss meet up groups.
CONS
Manual focus (= lots of wasted film/time/energy, and most importantly $$$).
Lucky to get 3 in 36 is in perfect, sharp focus.
About fifteen hundred more than I should have paid for it.
Hard name to pronounce.
Heavy (relatively).
Old-looking (e.g., belongs in grandpa's Lieca camera bag in the attic).
Overall, one star for feel, one for quality materials (steel), one for box, one for great images (when they're in focus) = 4 stars. Minus one star for price per image. Minus one star for customer support. = 2 stars total.
This is just one pro's opinion.
