Versatile Lens, December 19, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Nikon 35mm f/1.4G AF-S FX SWM Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics) I'm a wedding photographer who shoots in dark conditions often. This lens performs great in these conditions. I use this lens on a D3 body and the AF is good. It doesn't seem to be as fast at my zooms (24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8) but it's still pretty accurate when focusing in low light. The image quality is AMAZING. Certainly an upgrade from the older 35 f/2 version . Images has more contrast & are sharper. I also own the 24 1.4 G and I would say that the IQ on the 35 is about the same. Over all, I'm very impressed and satisfied with this 35. [...]

Here are some main points from my ownership experience, which has been largely positive:
-- Chromatic aberrations are very pronounced with this lens (purple and green fringing along high-contrast edges). Nikon has for one reason or another decided not to put ED (extra-low dispersion) glass in the 35/1.4G to correct for CAs, though they saw fit to put this exotic glass in the comparably-priced and superiorly-performing 24/1.4G. The View NX2 software that Nikon provides with its camera bodies is rather good at removing this kind of CA, but two things spring to mind regarding this issue:
a) If i spend $1800USD on a lens of new design, I shouldn't have to correct for CAs this extreme. My Canon 35/1.4L, introduced in 1998 and costing some $600USD less than the Nikon 35/1.4G, did not exhibit such extreme CAs... Read more

Phenomenal Lens! One of my favorite primes despite some issues., April 9, 2012 By This review is from: Nikon 35mm f/1.4G AF-S FX SWM Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics) Optically, this is an amazing piece. I also have the 24mm 1.4G and 85 1.4G which are all equally as impressive, but I find this 35mm focal length to be much more useful as an "everyday" lens. 35mm on a full frame body can pass as wide angle for landscapes and architecture as well as a portrait lens. And because of its close focus ability, it serves as a semi-macro lens as well with about .2X magnification and close focusing to about 1 foot. Background defocus is also more pronounced than the 24mm due to the focal length, and bokeh is almost as beautiful as the 85 1.4G. I've used it on a D700 and now on a D800 and when I pixel peep the 36 megapixel file, I'm even more amazed at how sharp this lens is. It's tack sharp wide open at f/1.4, which was not something I expected, so much so that any increase in sharpness when stopped down was only really noticeable near the edges upon close inspection. Perhaps Nikon designed the optical formula to be this way? If so, I applaud them... Read more
