Does what is says..., January 1, 2008 By CHarris (Georgia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Phoenix 500mm f/8 Telephoto Lens with Mount for Nikon D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D7000, D700, D800, D4 Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics) You definitely have to use a tripod and keep it very still. The quality of the picture was not great, but it was what I expected from an inexpensive lens. For what I would use it for it works perfectly fine. I don't think it will be very effective for action shots because it doesn't do well with any movement; although, the description says action/sports shots...I haven't tried, but with any movement the picture blurred quite a bit. It should be used for those wanting a closer shot of stills that doesn't mind a little less in quality, but a lot less in price.

For someone looking for a starter lens to take photos of celestial objects (i.e. the sun or moon) or objects further away that are not moving very fast it will do what you need.
I find that the lack of directions on it will put off someone who is not as familiar with a fully-manual lens. Likewise will you find that the lack of data transferred from the lens to your camera will make you need to take a pad of paper with you to keep track of every photo's settings in order to make sure you can attach the exif data afterwards on the computer.
I have used this lens for about 4 years with good results (see links below for photos of the sun and the moon). I haven't tried terrestrial objects so I can't give good opinions on that. One thing to mention however is the use of this lens with a teleconverter to double the... Read more
