Some cheap lenses are inspiring, yet leave much to be desired in terms of image quality. This lens is both wicked sharp and truly inspiring. Flipping through any of my photos, I can always tell the shots taken with my Nokton. Somehow, this lens has a soul.
Wide open at f/1.4, the image is somewhat soft in the center and quite soft in the corners. In real life, it is not too much of an issue because at f/1.4, your depth of field is so narrow, only what you focused on will be in focus (unless you are one of those poor people who only take photos of brick walls). Stop down to around f/2.0 or thereabouts, the bokeh becomes amazingly creamy and the center is sharp. Did I mention that the bokeh is superb? They say the insides are the same as in the previous one. I believe it after comparing the pictures people posted and the ones I captured with my lens. I use this lens with a Nikon D3200 camera. The crop sensor definitely crops away the imperfections while bringing 85mm equivalent to the view. I really like it. As far as what the sharpness/ bokeh, defocused area look, etc. compared to a 50mm or 85mm 1.4 from other brands, the out of focus objets at close distance look like they were painted with a brush. When I look at the lens I can see multiple reflections coming off the many elements inside, this makes no difference with objects far away, but shows as many contours around the shapes in the out of focus area, converging or departing one another from lines of contrast. At f2 or so the lens behaves like anything else you can buy at any price point.
